Eighty Years of Enriched Life – Wei Yi CHI Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition

The ink master Wei Yi CHI, known for his sincere and free-spirited personality, celebrates his 81st year with a retrospective exhibition at GSA Gallery Taichung, showcasing works from the past two decades. At the entrance, his calligraphy “With tranquility comes clarity; with serenity comes far-reaching vision” reflects a life of philosophical insight and a positive outlook, revealing the depth of his contemplative artistic journey. A total of 36 works are on display until November 18—visitors are warmly invited to experience the richness of his art.

Born in 1937 in Zhejiang Province, Wei Yi CHI began painting at the age of four or five in the ancestral square of his hometown. His innate talent and passion for art led him to Taiwan in 1949, and he later graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University in 1963. During his studies, he was mentored by renowned artists such as Pu Hsin-yu, Huang Chun-pi, Liao Chi-chun, Ma Pai-sui, Lee Tze-fan, Lin Yu-shan, Sun Tuo-tzu, and Zong Xiao-chen, laying a strong foundation in fine arts.

He pursued further studies in the United States, earning a master’s degree and then entering the doctoral program in Art and Archaeology at the University of Washington. During his 16 years abroad, the exchange between Eastern and Western cultures deeply influenced his ink painting, blending Western colors and brush techniques with Chinese tradition. His works embody the profound spirit of Chinese culture, infusing traditional ink with new vitality. In 2004, he was honored with the 11th Presidential “Global Chinese Culture Heritage Award – Chinese Painting Excellence Award,” one of the highest honors in the art world.

Wei Yi CHI once said, “Art is the expression of inner feelings—when painting freely and without constraint, surprising results emerge. Painting is a joyful experience.” Among the highlights of the exhibition are his Lotus and Peony paintings—his signature subjects. With graceful colors and practiced brushstrokes, CHI captures the elegance of blooming lotuses and ducks gliding across tranquil ponds, evoking the serene beauty of Zen-infused Eastern aesthetics and reflecting the artist’s ease and literati sensibility.

His Landscape Series reveals sweeping brushwork and dynamic line movements, composed from multiple perspectives to portray expansive views. Some works integrate Taiwan’s rural charm, narrowing the emotional distance between the viewer and the scene. Using traditional Chinese brush and ink, he conveys profound inner landscapes in harmony with nature.

In his Figure Series, CHI portrays characters such as Bodhidharma, Zhong Kui, and Laozi with a carefree and humorous brush, blending painting and calligraphy with a whimsical touch. These works embody his philosophy of living in the moment, embracing the simplicity of life, and invite the viewer into a world of open-hearted joy.

Walking through the exhibition, one witnesses the trajectory of a long and vibrant artistic life—a visual memoir. Former director of the National Museum of History, Ho Hao-tian, once remarked that CHI’s art embodies two key qualities: “First, a majestic dynamism expressed through powerful lines and confident ink work; second, an authentic and humble essence, revealing natural emotion and poetic symbolism.” Having devoted over sixty years to his craft, Wei Yi CHI continues to express the spirit of qi yun sheng dong (vitality and movement) and the harmony of heaven and man through ink. His enriched artistic life invites all to witness its radiant bloom.
