《Just Right》
Exhibition Statement
In an era bound by speed and standards, people often find themselves trapped in an endless pursuit of “becoming better.” Expectations and pressures—from society, from others, and even from within-relentlessly drive us toward an idealized future that may never be reached. Yet amid this perpetual chase, a fundamental question arises: What are we truly pursuing, and can we allow ourselves to pause and accept that things are “just right”?
The phrase “Just Right” is deliberately ambiguous and filled with tension. It can signify the hopeful longing of “If only it could be this way,” but also the self-acceptance of “I am fine as I am.” It oscillates between “enough” and “not enough,” serving both as a motivation for growth and as a reason to let go. This exhibition seeks to open a dialogue around these dualities—between desire and fulfillment, progress and pause.
The exhibition unfolds in two series, shifting from the contradictions of lived experience to the healing of the inner self:
1. Auspicious Paintings
Inspired by traditional cultural wishes for a good life, these works draw on auspicious wordplay and imagery. Animals symbolizing blessings and fortune are placed in scenes that are nearly transformative and surreal, yet they remain serene and self-contained. This juxtaposition reflects the dual state of mind: the yearning to transcend one’s circumstances while simultaneously finding contentment within them. The tension reveals the paradoxical human condition—forever caught between striving for more and embracing what is already here.
2. Inner Worlds
The aquarium becomes a symbolic boundary, separating the turbulence of the external world from a sanctuary of inner peace. Outside the boundary lies pressure and chaos; inside is an idealized space of rest and self-care. Here, “Just Right” shifts from compromise to reconciliation, from resignation to self-nourishment. These works invite viewers to turn inward, to discover resilience and freedom within, and to embrace moments of serenity amidst life’s uncertainties.
Ultimately, Just Right does not propose a fixed answer. Instead, it offers a lens through which to reflect. Desire and fulfillment, progress and pause, may coexist in the same moment. Perhaps it is precisely within this coexistence that we find a way to embrace both freedom and happiness in a complicated world.
nd happiness in a complicated world.
