Diary of Spiritual Redemption-Zhe Ming ZHAN Wood Sculpture Solo Exhibition
Apr 22 - May 20, 2023
“Cleft lip has always been a blank, missing piece in my life. I try to listen, to see, to feel—searching for anything that could fill that void and make it whole. Once I learned to accept this imperfection, I realized that many things I once felt compelled to chase were unnecessary. What remains after letting go—that is what’s most important and precious.”
— Zhe-Ming Zhan
Sculpture is an art of “mindful stillness,” where the tactile sensations beneath the blade breathe life and vitality into wood. In his solo wood sculpture exhibition Spiritual Redemption Diary, Zhan Zhe-Ming uses the image of a “rabbit” to symbolize warmth and happiness while also shaping a self-portrait. In response to the lifestyle changes brought on by the pandemic, he began focusing on the act of growing succulents as a central theme, cleverly merging natural forms into his sculptural language. Through delicately hand-carved lines and a gradually unfolding mindset, he captures a desire for comfort, softness, and tranquility—an inner yearning that sparks a pure and optimistic imagination. This practice invites the viewer to slow down and find peace in daily life, achieving a harmonious union of body and mind, and unlocking the power of self-healing.
Each plant is a treasure of nature. Through the daily observation and care of succulents, Zhan finds a stabilizing force—a silent companion at home. His “Plant Series” evolved from this experience, using woodcarving to anchor emotional resonance. From the diverse structures of plants to the selection of pots and surfaces, his works reflect the caregiver’s heart and real-life hopes. The warmth embedded in each hand-carved stroke transforms into a unique and vibrant energy, with every piece becoming a tangible reflection of inner emotions and lifestyle—offering the soul a channel for release and a sense of spiritual salvation.
Perhaps his cleft lip is the divine source of nourishment for his art. Through understanding, the sense of lack transforms into confidence and strength. Through wood sculpture, he explores life’s deeper meaning, releasing energy, reclaiming hope, and achieving a different kind of perfection—one where the soul finds redemption.
___詹哲名
