Art as Life: Artist His Chi Wu Engages the Public in a Dialogue on Aesthetic Living

As times evolve, 3C devices have become constant companions, and social media permeates every moment of daily life. Do you remember when a street sign and your voice were enough to find your way? Do you recall the awe of storing landscapes in your pupils rather than on a screen? Has technological advancement dulled our original spiritual sensibilities? Have we forgotten the awe of communicating with the universe and all living things?

Artist His Chi Wu’s solo exhibition “Human Cages & Silent Landscape” is now on view at GSA Gallery through November 13. Wu often remarks, “We’ve all been kidnapped by 3C devices.” In an age of hyper-connectivity, we’ve forgotten how to engage in real conversations, how to connect with nature, and how to preserve moments in our hearts more vividly than through a lens. Using oil pastels, Wu smears the dull numbness and quiet resignation of modern life onto his canvases, seeking to awaken viewers’ sensitivity to nature and rekindle spiritual introspection.

With his cropped hair and simple attire, Wu personally guides viewers through his creative process and vision. His explanation resonates with the public, stirring reflection on everyday experiences. His vivid, linear landscapes burst with bold, high-saturation hues—yet lack the delicate foliage that once defined nature, leaving only skeletal remnants. Under the grip of technology, our autonomy is eroded, and we become confined within intricately woven cages—personal “human-shaped prisons.”

Through his uniquely expressive works, Wu ignites an inner strength in viewers, encouraging the slow and nuanced integration of artistic perspective into daily life—ultimately raising our expectations for the quality and meaning of our existence.
