We — A Wood Sculpture Solo Exhibition by Yu Tung LIN 【
Jan 6 - Feb 27, 2021
“We”
“The essence of man is the ensemble of social relations.” — Karl Marx
Can you imagine a world
Where there is no “I,” no “you,”
Only we?
As described in Plato’s Symposium,
humans were once double beings—with four arms, four legs, and two heads—
until the gods split them apart.
Since then, we’ve been wandering the world in search of our missing halves.
Yet even when we find that other half,
we cling to the belief that we are independent individuals.
So we begin to shape fluid, liquid-like social relationships—
ones that allow us to enter and exit at will.
Still, no matter how strongly we preserve our sense of self,
it is built entirely through our interactions with others.
In today’s world, our way of coexisting is layered and complex.
To maintain harmony with others,
we must hide parts of ourselves.
Even the closest of relationships demand compromise.
We come to understand ourselves through the recognition of others.
And every version of “self”
is inseparable from the presence of others.
We.

|Opening Reception|January 9 (Sat), 2:00 PM
