The Diverse Expressions of Taiwanese Color Ink Painting
Huang Chao-Hu, President of the International Color Ink Painting Alliance
An outstanding and memorable painting is not determined by its size, but by its creativity and unique style.
The A4 paper size is a universally recognized and widely used format around the world. Measuring just 31.5 x 29 cm, it is the most common medium for contemporary documentation and writing, deeply embedded in the rhythm of modern life.
“A4” even echoes the phonetic tone of affirmation—“Yes.” For this reason, we provided thick A4-sized boards to 82 artists, inviting them to express the spirit and essence of Taiwanese color ink painting through diverse media and techniques. The result is 82 compact yet exquisite artworks, small in scale but rich in beauty. These works are now being presented in a touring exhibition across five universities in Taiwan, one local gallery, and a gallery in Spain. This project not only advocates for the internationalization of color ink art but also affirms the aesthetic and conceptual value of the A4 format—proving that small paintings can hold big ideas and deep meaning. From realism to abstraction, from depiction to collage, from two-dimensional to sculptural forms, these works showcase the vibrant imagination and expressive power of the artists, allowing audiences to experience the diverse qualities of Taiwanese color ink painting.
The color ink painting movement emerged in the 1990s in Taichung, Taiwan. It is not merely a blend of pigment and ink, but a fusion of multiple materials, the intersection of time and space, a dialogue between Eastern aesthetics and Western thought, and the merging of Taiwan’s unique identity with contemporary humanistic concerns. It emphasizes personal style and artistic integrity to shape a distinctive Taiwanese color ink aesthetic.
Taiwanese color ink painting has been exhibited in international touring exhibitions across countries such as the United States, Canada, Macau, France, Poland, El Salvador, Malaysia, the Philippines, Spain, and Mexico—earning praise from artists worldwide.
This year’s exhibition features A4-sized miniature works and tours five universities and two galleries in the hope of introducing the essence of color ink painting more deeply to students and art enthusiasts alike.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the participating artists, and special thanks to Prof. Lien-Tung Chuang (Department Chair of Fine Arts, NTNU) and former Dean Chen-Ming Lee for their curatorial collaboration. I am also thankful for the support of Prof. Chi-Chang Hsieh (NCYU), Prof. Chien-Fa Chen (NTNU), Director Yuan-Tung Wang (CJCU), Dean Chih-Yang Huang (HFU), Dean Yung-Fa Lin and Director Chang-Rong Lin (NTTU), Ms. Xaro of San Francesc 22 Art Space in Spain, and General Manager Shih-Hung Cheng of GSA Gallery in Taichung.
This promises to be a remarkable and influential traveling exhibition.
